6Reject   UnrejectBlack-chinned HummingbirdRutherfordPaola Hayespaolaatthebeach@yahoo.com8/20/2015My farm, 369 Clark Road, Rutherfordton, NC 28139I have a hummingbird feeder outside my window and have been watching them come to feed. A few days ago I thought I saw a male Black-chinned Hummingbird but then decided I must have seen a Ruby throated due to the Black chinned not being in this area. However, today, I saw an immature male with a very distinct single violet/red dot on it's throat, which according to my bird book is characteristic of an immature Black-chinned. Could I be seeing an immature Ruby-throated? Thank you. 2016-01-12 18:55:43Seems to be too early for one to appear in NC. Also, it is a bit risky to ID an immature male by a single colored feather. Might be correct, but best not to accept. 2017-01-16 10:38:06

It was a large bird the size of an Eagle, which I thought it may be. But researching, it looks like a Crested Caracara. The underside of the wings on the tip of the wings was white for about 1/4 of the wingspan, the rest of the wing was dark colored. It soared by above the trees, saw no wing flapping that is why I could see the wing colors. The underside of the body looked mostly dark and it was hard to see the head. I was really focusing on the wings in the brief sighting. If you think it is something else, or think it may be one, let me know. 2022-06-06 12:00:472022-07-22 20:43:15, 98.26.9.92

Thought at first glance that it was a American Goldfinch mutant of some sort - bigger, thicker and the yellow belly. Looked it up in my Field Guide and easily ID'd the Evening Grosbeak! Could not get a photo before he (I do believe it was the male) flew away. Hope he comes back.2016-09-10 11:46:58Way too early for an Evening Grosbeak, and now quite rare in the state at any time.0000-00-00 00:00:00

I have an owl, blue heron, many water fowl and other animals regularly along Blanket Bottom Creek as it goes to the Yadkin River from Lasater Lake. I am not an Ornithologist or even an amateur bird watcher, but I do believe this is a Golden Eagle. I will definitely continue to try to get a picture of this majestic bird.2016-01-12 18:59:23This is almost certainly an immature Bald Eagle. For the last 3 years I have watched these birds. This year, I have picked her up more often. I have no photos that have helped me ID, but I watch these birds almost obsessively. By 3:20pm (when school announcementsare made), one flies off and the other sits in a tree and watches. Every. Single. Day. Too big too be a hawk, from the markings I can see it's not a bald eagle and I truly believe they are not osprey. 2023-05-03 03:27:342023-08-10 10:48:39, 174.99.16.142

I hear a Great Horned owl very often in the fall. I have not heard him since about mid November, but if you come to the Holloway Park area around nightfall, you can clearly hear him. It's a regular hoo-hoo- hooo-hoooo call. I haven't ever seen him, but he has come into the trees near my home once (as his call sounded very close that night), but his song is beautiful. Great Horned Owls are definitely in Lenoir county too.2020-12-31 11:34:382021-02-23 18:54:07, 174.99.11.225

The lake was very foggy at 4:30 pm and I estimated there were 4000 gulls sitting on the water off the boat ramp area of lake. I scoped the gulls for anything unusual. I picked up two that were darker than the rest and studied them for some time. I watched them on the water and finally saw them fly. They had a dark mantle that didn't contrast with wing tip when flew. Mottled head. Slightly larger than ring bill gulls nearby. Were sitting on the water near each other.2016-09-04 04:18:400000-00-00 00:00:00

High Rock Road 1/2 mile from NC Hwy. 18.I was driving to town and saw a momma and 2 baby birds crossing the road. I had never seen this type of bird before (am 42 yrs old and native of Watauga County). I turned around and tried to get a video of the mother. She went the opposite way from her babies. I noticed that the bird was flying more upright than horizontal and it's body seemed heavier on the bottom like a pear. The colorings were brown, some scattered black to head and wings and she was peeping loudly in order to keep me distracted from seeing her babies on the other side of the road. The video is very distant because the mother flew off everytime I tried to see her.2016-01-12 19:11:17Apparently was an American Woodcock with chicks. 2017-01-19 15:59:17, 76.3.215.211

I was w/ a group of about 15 from New Hope Audubon. We hiked from the office past Somerset buildings then into woods & back.Heard only! The bird called persistently - woot woot , etc - several seconds between each call (subtle pitch increase on end of each 'wooOT'). Just past last building, next to field (on left) that had some large trees in it. When we walked past the location on our return trip about 15 minutes later, the bird was still calling. We listened for a long while. 2016-01-12 19:13:18This was discussed quite a bit on carolinabirds listserve 2 years ago, and there was some concern, if consensus, that it MAY have been a Great Horned Owl. A bit too risky to claim this as a record based on a call. 2017-01-16 10:38:06

From what I have read, this would be both odd timing and odd location for the bird, but not entirely implausible. Bird's behavior also seemed consistent with what I read about Northern Goshawk. Only alternative I can think of was Cooper's Hawk but did not appear to match pictures I have seen.2016-01-12 19:14:39Almost had to be a Cooper's Hawk. Goshawk does not occur in NC in the warmer months, and would be exceedingly rare in a suburban yard. 2017-02-02 11:12:31, 149.168.27.4

65Reject   UnrejectPine GrosbeakGranvilleDeck Stapletondestapleton@embarqmail.comMay, 199280 acre farm on Jack Clement rdI know, I know I better have a photo for this to count. Unfortunately that's not the case. This is really NOT a submission because I do not have the documentation that would be required. But here is what happened on that date...I was outside doing some chore when a noticed a flock of sparrows (probably a lingering flock of white throated) and in that flock wI noticed a large cardinal sized pinkish bird. At the time I was really only a mid level birder, I knew the residents well and migrants fairly well. As far as finches I knew house and purple finch. The others, like crossbills etc, I knew only vaguely from pictures in field guides. So I see this bird and run into hse to get bins and field guide, I come back out, it's still there. I study bird and check field guide and the only thing that fits is pine grosbeak. When I saw its range in the field guide I realized I would probably never see another one on this property. So I watched and followed it for a few minutes. I remember it being rather tame. So I was able to watch it from fairly close by, say 30ft or so. So why did I not report it then? At the time I didn't know Carolina Bird Club existed nor did I really have any idea of how unusual a sighting it was. Birding was just something at the time that I did on my own land as a way of being more connected to the land. I didn't even know any other birders at the time. So, while I have this bird on my farm list and life list with absolutely no reservations I realize I would need photos or multiple qualified observers to confirm(and I did notice it's not listed for any counties where there are historic reports due to same documentation issues). So again this is not a real submission, I just wanted to report it. I wish I had owned a camera at the time, I could have gotten some killer photos. 2016-01-12 19:19:03Test from Tom_20170102 2017-01-27 16:14:38, 149.168.27.4
