First observed flying away toward the far side of the then it circled and landed in the top of a tree across the lake from our position near the main office. I got my scope out and we watched it for about 10 minutes until it dropped down where we could not see it. Digiscope in the ebird list and a super cropped photo taken at 500 mm and cropped way down added here.

After I kayaked under the I85 bridge heading west I saw the bird on the first mudflat on my right. This mudflat is north of the river channel. The bird then flew to flats further northwest, still in the area shown on Delorme atlas of NC as being in Granville Co.Bird in it's black and white winter coat. I'm sure this was the same bird seen and reported by others around that time.2011-12-11 22:20:090000-00-00 00:00:00

I didn't have my bins at the time though I pretty sure it was a bittern. Went back to house(I live on the property), got bins, relocated bird. Needed to make sure it wasn't immature night heron. Got good look with bins, it was definitely bittern. Bill, stance, rich brown stripes on neck and breast confirmed id. 2011-12-08 16:22:500000-00-00 00:00:00

I suspected they were Wigeon as I have seen them many times in Alaska. A neighbor came by walking her dog and I asked her to watch for them as she went around the pond. She offered not to go that way. I said, "No, please walk around the pond; you may startle them and they may fly closer to us." Sure enough, that worked. We were able to get a close look at them. They were wigeons. Then as she walked further, she and the dog startled a pair of Wood Ducks which swam to the middle of the pond. My first sightings of these two species on the Silver Creek Plantation.2014-03-05 18:37:000000-00-00 00:00:00

Headlights hit bird , long bill reddish underside. Odd sighting due to the development of the area the bird was in. There is an empty lot with some trees near by but bird was on the grass nearly at curb of road when seen. By circumstance I was working with the Boy Scouts that night on Bird ID's. I was very much a novice and not a birder at the time but had reference material with me for instructional purposes that night. I immediately determined it was either a Wilson's Snipe or American Woodcock. I had a Birds of NC laminated foldout that allowed me to narrow to the two but lacked clear identifying marks to separate them. Bird had extremely long bill, and was short and was short and squatty. Car lights also showed a reddish, now what I would refer to as buffy underside. Bird remained stationary for about 15 seconds before a near straight up flight. At that time I was unaware of flight style and general likeliness of American Woodcock given location. Primary identifier was buffy breast versus white showing on underside. Photographs I had taken during the Scout meeting that night allowed me to accurately determine the date. 2015-03-07 15:15:040000-00-00 00:00:00

The behavior was raptor-like. Quick flap-flap-flap-flap, then soar... then repeated. The neck could have been buffy, but looked "white" to me as far up as it was. The snake-like head and neck were very distinctive. I lived in New Orleans for 9 years before moving to Mt. Airy 4 years ago, and was active with the Crescent City Bird Club. We saw plenty of Anhingas, soaring, sitting, drying wings, etc. I am positive of the ID - just thought it might be unusual for where I was seeing it - Jean Aldrich. Submitted by Phil Dickinson on behalf of Jean after consultation with John Haire.
