Rocky Branch Greenway, NCSU Campus.

Flushed 2x from thick patch of Japanese Stilgrass just west of pond by Pullen Rd. overpass; bright orange eyebrow/face, med-length bill, buffy-orange upper breast with numerous short distinct streaks sharply cut off from white lower breast/belly all seen well. Also appeared to have buffy coloration and some diffuse streaking continuing down flanks. Have seen approx. 30 individuals of this species well in VA and NC, includng in-hand comparison with Saltmarsh Sparrows when assisting with research operations.

Concord Church 4076 Florence Rd, Pamlico County, North Checklist S50784177 eBird for map Carolina, Unobstructed view crossing an open farm field 300’ away approached from the southwest to the northeast flying directly to us and about 40’ over our heads. Sunny, clear, sky, calm at 39.

Northern Goshawk Compact stocky bulky accipiter, was in view for 40sec. approach from across a field towards us and flew directly over head. Broad wings1 wing=about the size of the body length. Pale gray/white checkered pattern underneath with darker gray checked pattern on wing tips. Thick necked, broad dark head, white eyebrow, straight tail appeared short due to vent feathering. Tail closed straight and appeared squared off with white tip. Ruled out Coopers and Sharp-shinned no rust under markings. No leading edge on wings, white eyebrow missing from both, much bulkier in shape.Viewed a NOGH one other time. Familiar with Raptors common in the area which are Red-shouldered, Red-tailed, Coopers, Sharp-shinned, Northern Harrier, American Kestrel, Merlin, Bald Eagles. I see these on a regular basis, I bird this area daily. Guide Books and apps consulted- Sibley guide, Audubon and Sibley app consulted onsite. Consulted The Crossley ID guide for Raptors, discussed and question at the CBC species count down.

Pond north of Concord Church Rd. just west of SR 57.

Continuing bird; seen well in scopes along western shore of pond; larger than Killdeer in vicinity, metallic greenish irridescence seen on upperparts/back in sunlight, thick breast band on white breast obvious, short plume/crest visible at times, short plover bill and brownish face with hint of paler supercilium and dark mark in the eye area also noted. Red-orange undertail cov.s noted when bird on ground. Bold tail markings and strikingly broad wings also noted when bird was in flight (flushed short distance, maybe by presence of Northern Harrier).

Battle Park, Tar River trail, Rocky Mount.

Along edge or Tar River. Plain reddish brown back. No wingbars. White eyebrow. Streaked belly and throat with yellow wash to throat. Bobbing tail.

Huntersville (near Lake Norman)

Believe I saw and got a (not perfect) photo of a Northern Goshawk perched on the swingset in our back yard of a heavily forested residential subdivision. From what I have read, this would be both odd timing and odd location for the bird, but not entirely implausible. Bird's behavior also seemed consistent with what I read about Northern Goshawk. Only alternative I can think of was Cooper's Hawk but did not appear to match pictures I have seen.

Almost had to be a Cooper's Hawk. Goshawk does not occur in NC in the warmer months, and would be exceedingly rare in a suburban yard.
