Flying east along hwy 64 bypass, about 3 miles east of Taylorsville, NC
comments
While traveling east on hwy 64 near Taylorsville, NC, we observed a heron fly across the road in front of us, distance about 50 feet and continue parallel to the road for about 30 seconds. Bird was medium sized, larger than a Green Heron, smaller than a Great Blue. Slow wingbeats, neck tucked in. Body mostly dark gray, with maroon neck. Bill mostly dark, especially the tip. Legs were out stretched. Belly was dark, ruling out Tri-colored Heron. We had excellent views with no obstructions, even though we were in our car.

5PendingLong-billed DowitcherUnionDennis Kent, Greg Haysdenniskent1956@gmail.com7 November 2022Lake TwittyCombination of field marks/impression and opinion by other seasoned birders led to this ID. Obvious dowitcher species, sized between the killdeer and GRYE, with a very long straight bill and typical “sewing machine” feeding manner. Appeared to be a juvenile but with a more washed out/ grayer appearance than found with juvenile SBDO. Overall impression was bulky with a hunchbacked look, though perhaps not quite as exaggerated as some classic photos. The bill seemed exceptionally long when viewed in profile. Plumage pattern was fairly plain with solid centers & darker edges to tertials than expected with juvenile SBDO. The Nov migration timing of this bird fits better with LBDO than SBDO. Finally, while the bird did not vocalize during this observation period, others were able to later get the bird to react to an alert posture after playing the LBDO call.ViewYes2024-07-16 06:27:232024-07-16 18:27:23

Not a Song Sparrow song. Found a sparrow up in a brushy area singing. A large sparrow. Rufous and white striking head pattern. Clear white breast with a dark central spot. When it flew it had white cornered tail pattern. Saw foraging on ground at later time. Familiar with Lark Sparrow as is common in summer in areas close to the Mississippi River, about 45 to an hour from my home. Saw one several years ago in a local area.2015-11-19 19:38:190000-00-00 00:00:00

The lake was very foggy at 4:30 pm and I estimated there were 4000 gulls sitting on the water off the boat ramp area of lake. I scoped the gulls for anything unusual. I picked up two that were darker than the rest and studied them for some time. I watched them on the water and finally saw them fly. They had a dark mantle that didn't contrast with wing tip when flew. Mottled head. Slightly larger than ring bill gulls nearby. Were sitting on the water near each other.2016-09-04 04:18:400000-00-00 00:00:00

High Rock Road 1/2 mile from NC Hwy. 18.I was driving to town and saw a momma and 2 baby birds crossing the road. I had never seen this type of bird before (am 42 yrs old and native of Watauga County). I turned around and tried to get a video of the mother. She went the opposite way from her babies. I noticed that the bird was flying more upright than horizontal and it's body seemed heavier on the bottom like a pear. The colorings were brown, some scattered black to head and wings and she was peeping loudly in order to keep me distracted from seeing her babies on the other side of the road. The video is very distant because the mother flew off everytime I tried to see her.2016-01-12 19:11:17Apparently was an American Woodcock with chicks. 2017-01-19 15:59:17, 76.3.215.211

I was w/ a group of about 15 from New Hope Audubon. We hiked from the office past Somerset buildings then into woods & back.Heard only! The bird called persistently - woot woot , etc - several seconds between each call (subtle pitch increase on end of each 'wooOT'). Just past last building, next to field (on left) that had some large trees in it. When we walked past the location on our return trip about 15 minutes later, the bird was still calling. We listened for a long while. 2016-01-12 19:13:18This was discussed quite a bit on carolinabirds listserve 2 years ago, and there was some concern, if consensus, that it MAY have been a Great Horned Owl. A bit too risky to claim this as a record based on a call. 2017-01-16 10:38:06
