7AcceptHenslow's SparrowBuncombeSteve Rittstevenmritt@gmail.com10/30/13Warren Wilson College, Swannanoa, NC "...all found today in the field on the east side of Warren Wilson Road, between the WWC barn and the river. Park just north of the river, cross the road and back over the river, and walk left down the dirt road. Turn right at the port-a-potty, then turn right into the second field you encounter, just on the other side of the drainage ditch. Follow this ditch down to the pond by the barn. All of the mentioned birds were found halfway down this ditch, near where the line of trees stretches perpendicular back to Warren Wilson Road."Picture attached here. The bird was surprisingly cooperative for about 90 seconds, allowing good looks and decent digi-bino photographs with my cell phone. Word was put out immediately at 1100h.ViewYes2014-01-31 17:59:410000-00-00 00:00:00
8AcceptHenslow's SparrowCumberlandAlexander fishjessie.schillaci@us.army.mil4/8/14678245/3888816 Fort Bragg land nav course, longleaf pine habitat burned 2013. Captured in mist net by NCSU grad student conducting BACS researchLocation: We were roughly 150 meters south of fire break five (in the land Navigation course). If you look in the GIS forest stand layer, there is a group of longleaf pine stands (both north and south of fire break five). Habitat Description: We flushed the Henslow's Sparrow in an area with fewer mature longleaf pine trees, with a relatively dense layer of grass and short shrubs. A prescribed burn had recently been conducted just north of the capture location and our encounter could have been a move forced by the recent fire. Generally speaking, that part of the land navigation course has discrete patches of wiregrass, boarded by areas with more shrubs and leaf litter. Burn History: I looked in GIS and the stand was last burned in 2013, as a growing season fire. View2014-04-15 20:20:300000-00-00 00:00:00
