Sized in-between the DUNL and LESA. Very buffy overtones on head and chest. Dark legs and bill; bill short and straight compared to DUNL. Elongated wings extending beyond tail, evident in typical horizontal feeding posture. Distant photos.

2PendingBlack-crowned Night-HeronUnionDennis Kentdenniskent1956@gmail.com5 August, 2019Lake Twitty First county Ebird record. All four birds with black caps. It appears two of the birds were second spring birds with gray wash on neck sides and two birds pure white neck as expected in adults. All four birds with yellow legs, no orange legs like in high breeding adults. Photos eliminate similar YCNH. Birds were found in cove on Chinkapin Creek just south of New Salem Rd. crossing. Viewed from kayak. First located as one individual flew over me from lake side toward cove. I flushed three birds from cove and after roosting along creek sides, eventually flew back to cove and roosted and I was eventually able to photograph them in cove area.ViewYes2024-07-16 05:24:242024-07-16 17:24:24

49AcceptBarn OwlDurhamCox Family and two additional neighbors virginia.cox6@gmail.com6/29North Durham near the West Point on the EnoWe spotted two large owls on June 25th and noticed their white color and unique sound. When we played the barn owl sound from allaboutbirds.com it was an exact match to what we were hearing outside. We again spotted two owls the next night and have heard their calls. On the 29th we saw two white owls fly to a tree, and clearly saw that they looked like barn owls. When the owls flew into the neighboring yard the neighbors also saw them, spotting 3 owls! Another neighbor believes they saw the owls as well. We all have old tobacco barns on our properties and live close to the eno river with plenty of property. Spoke with folks at Piedmont Wildlife Center and they said with such a unique call, it must be barn owls 2017-07-01 04:51:232017-07-07 10:50:49, 174.99.24.111

He noticed the bird as it walked along the edge of the pond in the company of three Canada Geese. The very long red legs, black stiletto-like bill, white underparts, and black upperparts were striking. Chris immediately called other birders about his sighting and several birders tried for the bird from 8:45 a.m. and then throughout the day. Very unfortunately, it was not relocated. Chris did not realize at the time how unusual his sighting was for the county and, therefore, did not attempt photos or video with his phone. A few days ago I thought I saw a male Black-chinned Hummingbird but then decided I must have seen a Ruby throated due to the Black chinned not being in this area. However, today, I saw an immature male with a very distinct single violet/red dot on it's throat, which according to my bird book is characteristic of an immature Black-chinned. Could I be seeing an immature Ruby-throated? Thank you. 2016-01-12 18:55:43Seems to be too early for one to appear in NC. Also, it is a bit risky to ID an immature male by a single colored feather.
