18AcceptGolden EagleAveryJesse Pope, Jillian Goodwin, Katheryn Grayhighcountrybirder@yahoo.commid-September, have the Grandfather Mountain, at the Half Moon Overlook. During one of our annual fall hawk counts from Grandfather Mountain, a few of our staff observed a Golden Eagle flying over Sugar Mountain. The bird was flying out of the Northeast across Sugar Mtn. We observed the bird flying along the ridgeline of Sugar Mtn. and Linville Ridge heading southwest. It was an immature bird, with moderate wing patches on the outer portions of the underwing. We observed the bird for a few minutes before it continued out of sight. It never slowed down, and continued on a pretty straight path south.2011-11-23 21:44:260000-00-00 00:00:00

It was seen from the southern end near Meadowlark School.Strong cold front the night before. About 10:00 am a large dark raptor was sighted soaring way above the greenway. We noted the smaller head and overall dark color and bulging wings. It was near a Red-shouldered Hawk which was much smaller and could be identified by the crescents in the wings. Some observers could see some white in the secondary's but it was not until we got a photo back (enlarged 150x)that we could id the bird for sure. The photos were taken by Cara Woods.2015-11-24 19:04:020000-00-00 00:00:00
21AcceptGolden EagleForsythDavid Disher, Susan Disher and 35 participents in the Forsyth Audubon 2nd Saturday Bird Walkdkdisher@gmail.com11-14-2015Muddy Creek Greenway. The exact spot is near the gravel parking lot just south of Meadowlark School About 10:00 am a large dark raptor was observed soaring way up in the air. The sky was clear blue and a good cold front had come through the night before. The large raptor was in the vicinity of a Red-shouldered Hawk which appeared much smaller. The Red-shouldered Hawk was identified by the longish wings and crescents shining through toward the wingtips. I could see a smaller head than Bald Eagle and bulging wings. Some said they could see a little white in the secondary's but I could not due to sun angle. We were not sure of ID until reviewing Cara Woods photos of the bird which showed the above field marks plus white in tail and a little white in secondary's. I have the photo from Cara Woods but can not submit it because it is in png format instead of jpg and I can not convert it. I can e-mail the photo to whomever is interested. This is the first county record for Forsyth County.2016-01-12 19:01:582017-01-02 13:27:58

31AcceptGolden-winged WarblerAlamanceMatt Spanglerspangler.birds@outlook.com8/22/15William Nealy Memorial Haw River Trail Access, in Saxapahaw. After pulling off of the North side of the bridge, it was about 100 yards down the trail (towards the dam).I think this is a first for Alamance. I recorded on eBird upon sighting. I got great looks from about 20 feet away on-and-off for about 30 seconds or 1 minute, and immediately recorded all field marks in my notebook before confirming via field guide. Unfortunately, I did not get a picture, as I was too busy making sure I got every field mark as it flitted in and out of this one set of vines on a tree. By the time I got my camera out and focused on the tree/vines, it was gone. The bird had extremely noticeable yellow/gold wing bars on an otherwise dark blue/gray body. Yellow/gold cap was also visible, and the white eyebrow and submustachial were very bold. Slim dark bill. I didn't notice an excessively contrasting dark throat, so it must have been a female. 100% sure about the ID.2015-09-02 20:03:120000-00-00 00:00:00

60AcceptGray-cheeked ThrushAlamanceMark Anthonymark0723birds@gmail.com10-08-2014Cedar Rock ParkI thought this was a Gray-cheeked Thrush after reviewing several guides and the CBC website but wanted an expert opinion. I contacted Steve Shultz who had the following response. Grey-cheeked! Nice bird! Veery looks very warm and orangish, with very light spotting, usually, on the throat. The photographed bird is dark and has extensive dark spotting. Wood Thrush has distinct white eye ring and more evenly spaced spotting extending all the day down the undersides. The back is more orangey-brown and the undersides stark white (other than the splotches) Swainson's shows a distinct buff colored eye ring and buffy underparts. Note the white rectangle under this birds throat... not a hint of buff at all. Grey-cheeked shows the same spotting pattern on the breast, back color, facial pattern, and that white mark under the chin as the pictured bird. The bird COULD possibly be a Hermit. But, it's a touch early for them, and they typically have a distinct reddish orange tail that they pop up and down pretty much constantly. Although the photos are in shade, it appears the back and tail are the SAME COLOR, which would point to Grey-cheek and away from Hermit. Steve Shultz To address the Hermit Thrush I noted no bobbing of the tail on this bird.ViewYes2014-10-09 21:41:050000-00-00 00:00:00

68AcceptGray-cheeked ThrushHaywoodMichael Lestermlester126@gmail.com09/17/13Yard in Waynesville, NC. [Near downtown]New to NC (as of 9/16), but not new to birding. Just found this website and noticed that this species is not on the Haywood county list. Details below are written from memory. Bird responded to pishing at edge of a small woodlot patch. Somewhat dense vegetation draped in grapevines. This is only the second GCTH I've seen, but I have seen many SWTH, which this individual clearly stood out from. Catharus thrush with narrow white (not buffy) eye ring, gray overall with very gray flanks and sides of breast, as well as cheek. No buff in cheek (as far as I can tell), which would typically be present in SWTH. I guess I cannot rule out BITH 100% (which I've only seen once), but Sibley shows BITH as being slightly browner overall. BITH also seems less likely as it is much rarer in the state, but this may be an artifact of difficult field identification. No photos. 2013-11-01 18:17:590000-00-00 00:00:00

Almost every day since, I have been searching the area around the course and looking through the many resident geese trying to find it. Today, 1/10/17, at about 1:00 PM, my wife and I rode through the area and in the first group of geese we saw beside the fairway, I spotted the GWF Goose. I called several members of our bird club and Jerry Lotterhos came out with his camera and got very good pictures. One of the pictures is submitted, but others are available. Flew large circle, back to pines Watched it through binoculars (and without) for much of the afternoon. 2016-01-12 18:58:15Almost certainly an immature Bald Eagle, as Golden Eagle isn't found around tidal waters, nor this early in fall. 2017-01-31 15:55:00, 149.168.27.4

I have an owl, blue heron, many water fowl and other animals regularly along Blanket Bottom Creek as it goes to the Yadkin River from Lasater Lake. I am not an Ornithologist or even an amateur bird watcher, but I do believe this is a Golden Eagle. I will definitely continue to try to get a picture of this majestic bird.2016-01-12 18:59:23This is almost certainly an immature Bald Eagle. For the last 3 years I have watched these birds. This year, I have picked her up more often. I have no photos that have helped me ID, but I watch these birds almost obsessively. By 3:20pm (when school announcementsare made), one flies off and the other sits in a tree and watches. Every. Single. Day. Too big too be a hawk, from the markings I can see it's not a bald eagle and I truly believe they are not osprey. 2023-05-03 03:27:342023-08-10 10:48:39, 174.99.16.142

I hear a Great Horned owl very often in the fall. I have not heard him since about mid November, but if you come to the Holloway Park area around nightfall, you can clearly hear him. It's a regular hoo-hoo- hooo-hoooo call. I haven't ever seen him, but he has come into the trees near my home once (as his call sounded very close that night), but his song is beautiful. Great Horned Owls are definitely in Lenoir county too.2020-12-31 11:34:382021-02-23 18:54:07, 174.99.11.225
