On a "sandbar" in Tar River Reservoir: 35.849075,-77.920425

Large tern sitting on sandbar. Dark cap that extended from crown to beak. Reddish beak. Dark under primaries. Saw it sitting and then flying. Was joined by a second Caspian tern as I was leaving area. Appeared to be juvenile -- it's mantle was light and speckled looking.

A few years ago I noticed an odd unfamiliar sound in the evening. Now I know that the sound is a common nighthawk. I have recorded the sound on my phone numerous times. My Merlin bird app has identified the sound as a common nighthawk. It is still in the area as I just heard it!

Large black bird, larger than a crow, wedge shaped tail, larger head and bill. Familiar with the species. Raven was flying about 50' high, over a parking lot and heading toward a large granite quarry located less than half mile from where we saw it.

US 421 North, about .5 mile from Chatham County line at the Deep River bridge.

Two solid black birds were flying fairly low, directly towards me as I was driving north on US 421. My first reaction was "wow, those are awfully big crows". As they flew directly over me, I saw the wedge-shaped tail, and I also noticed that they had a much slower wingbeat than a Common Crow. I did not hear them call, since I was in my car. I think Parker Backstrom had previously reported Raven for Lee County on cbirds, but I saw that it wasn't on the Lee County list.

I got home from work early today (about 2:45 PM). The weather was cloudy with a light drizzle. As I exited my vehicle, I heard the familiar call notes of Pine Siskins. I also heard an unfamiliar call with them. After I got in the house, I went to the kitchen where I could see the bird feeders (sunflower and thistle). I saw siskins on the thistle feeder, so I grabbed my binocular. A Common Redpoll hopped onto the thistle feeder. I first saw the red cap, then saw the black bib and black between the eyes and the bill. It was streaked somewhat similar to the siskins, I also noted two dull whitish wingbars, one somewhat wider that the other. The birds did not stay and feed for very long. I don't know if they will return or not, although I have been hearing the siskins in the trees nearby for the past several days.

Pine Island Audubon Sanctuary

Spotted in live oak forest. Flushed from path, landed on a tree branch. Large warbler, with gray hood, pink legs, full eyering, yellow underparts, and dull yellow wings and back. After a few moments, the bird hopped off the branch and landed in the underbrush, and walked away into thicker vegetation. Submitted to and accepted by eBird.

Southport within city limits. 807 Cape Harbor Drive

I saw the bird fly over, traveling north to south heading toward the Cape Fear River. It was a large bird the size of an Eagle, which I thought it may be. But researching, it looks like a Crested Caracara. The underside of the wings on the tip of the wings was white for about 1/4 of the wingspan, the rest of the wing was dark colored. It soared by above the trees, saw no wing flapping that is why I could see the wing colors. The underside of the body looked mostly dark and it was hard to see the head. I was really focusing on the wings in the brief sighting. If you think it is something else, or think it may be one, let me know.
