General Comments Accidental; a single record. A Smooth-billed Ani was collected at Edenton (Chowan) on 23 Aug 1866 (specimen at Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences). Potter et al. (2006) state that the record "... is generally considered to be that of an escaped captive bird". Even though this bird could have been an escaped individual -- as the range is southern Florida southward, all NC BRC's have considered the record as valid, and the species is thus on the Official List [Chat 54:53-58 link].
