General Comments This is a Western species that is strongly migratory, wintering in the far southwestern states and in Mexico. Despite its migratory tendencies, it very seldom strays into the eastern half of the country, with barely a handful of records there. However, on 22 Nov 2024 one was photographed over the Scuppernong River in Tyrrell County, and a few other birders were able to see/photograph the bird before it departed an hour or two later [Chat 89:12 link]. As this is the first and only state record, it is being reviewed by the NC BRC.
