General Comments
This is a species of the Southwestern states, ranging north only to central Texas and central Arizona. However, it does stray eastward somewhat often, though mostly close to the Gulf Coast to Florida. The first state report was a male, though apparently not yet in full breeding plumage, at a feeder in Morehead City (Carteret), seen by many people from 11-29 Feb 2020* (Chat 84:70), (Chat 85:140); a color photo is found in the first reference, plus additional ones on the Carolina Bird Club Photo Gallery. Interestingly, another bird -- or possibly the same bird as found earlier in Morehead City -- was photographed under a feeder in James City (Craven) on 4 May and again on 9 May 2020* (Chat 84:100); photos are also on that Photo Gallery. Both have been accepted by the NC BRC.
