General Comments
This Old World species breeds from the British Isles eastward to the Pacific Coast of Siberia. Thus, the Garganey has such a wide range that strays to North America can, and do, occur along both coasts; there are many records even from mid-continent. However, the species is kept in captivity, and thus each state/province records committee has a difficult decision judging the provenance of each report. Only one such report has been accepted (as being of wild origin) by the NC BRC.

Coastal Plain
Accidental. The only state record, accepted by the NC BRC as being of wild origin, was of a male seen at a pond in Buxton (Dare) in Mar 1957* (Chat 21:68-70; Chat 21:88). An earlier committee had considered the bird to be a possible escape, and had not placed it on the Provisional/Accepted List. As no photo is available for the bird, it is thus accepted only to Provisional status.
