General Comments
This is a Western species that is strongly migratory, wintering in the far southwestern states and in Mexico. Despite its migratory tendencies, it very seldom strays into the eastern half of the country, with barely a handful of records there. However, on 22 Nov 2024 one was photographed over the Scuppernong River in Tyrrell County, and a few other birders were able to see/photograph the bird before it departed an hour or two later* (Chat 89:12), (Chat 90:5). This is the only state record; photos are posted on the Carolina Bird Club Photo Gallery.
