Birds of North Carolina
their Distribution and Abundance
Scientific Name:
Common Name:
Family (Alpha):
Parulidae Members: Painted Redstart 12254

General Comments
The Painted Redstart is one of the more beautiful of North American wood-warblers, being a species primarily limited to Mexico and the southwestern United States. There are relatively few strays to the East Coast, and thus it was quite a surprise when one -- sexes are similar and essentially indistinguishable, and immatures have acquired adult plumage before fall migration -- showed up at North Pond at Pea Island NWR (Dare), to be seen and photographed by numerous people on 5-6 Oct 2020* (Chat 85:38), (Chat 85:141). The record has been accepted by the NC BRC, and photos can be seen on the Carolina Bird Club Photo Gallery.
