General Comments
Arguably the most remarkable pelagic discovery in the northwestern Atlantic Ocean was the photographing of a Tahiti Petrel off Hatteras (Dare) on 29 May 2018* (Chat 82:89) (Chat 84:10-13). Photos can be found on the Seabirding website of Brian Patteson and in Chat 84:10-13 plus on the issue's cover page). The record has been accepted by the NC BRC (Chat 83:19). According to Nate Swick's blog on the American Birding Association (ABA) website: "Tahiti Petrel is a fairly common species of the tropical Pacific, breeding on a number of island groups in the area including its namesake Tahiti. It ranges widely, and is seen regularly as far east as the western coast of Costa Rica and southwest Mexico. This North Carolina bird would represent the 1st ABA Continental record as the inclusion of Hawaii added Tahiti Petrel to the main ABA Checklist by virtue of that state’s 4-5 accepted records..."
