General Comments
This uncommon and declining Western shorebird breeds only in dry, short-grass plains. It had been recorded in Virginia as early as 1976, and it was seen and photographed in South Carolina in 2007. Thus, a record for North Carolina was well overdue, and finally that record came during a shorebird survey in early 2016 on the remote Core Banks, at the south side of Ophelia Inlet (Carteret). Many birders saw the plover from 26 Jan - 27 Feb 2016* (Chat 80:83), (Chat 82:54-55). The record has been reviewed and accepted by the NC BRC, adding the species to the Definitive List.
