General Comments
This Old World counterpart of the Semipalmated Plover is found primarily in North America as a rare breeder in far northern Canada, but from there it migrates back and forth to winter in the Old World. It is very seldom reported in the United States outside of Alaska, but one was photographed adjacent to the Cedar Island ferry terminal in Carteret on 15 May 2014* (Chat 78:162), (Chat 79:171-173), (N. Am. Birds 68:491-493); photos are in N. Am. Birds 68:569, on the Carolina Bird Club Photo Gallery, and in the latter Chat reference. The record has been reviewed and accepted by the NC BRC (Chat 79:14). A first record for the fall season came from Pea Island NWR (Dare), where one was seen and photographed on 12-13 Oct 2018* (Chat 83:19), (Chat 83:25); photos are also on the Carolina Bird Club Photo Gallery.
