Birds of North Carolina
their Distribution and Abundance
Scientific Name:
Common Name:
Family (Alpha):
ANATIDAE Members: Tufted Duck 12220

General Comments
The Tufted Duck is a Eurasian species, straying somewhat regularly to the extreme northeastern parts of North America, as well as to Alaska. Records committees often have difficulty judging provenance of many reports, as the species is often kept by waterfowl breeders. The species is accidental in the state, with just a single record: a male seen and photographed at a wastewater treatment pond in Winston-Salem from 30 Jan - 14 Feb 2009* (Chat 73:149-153); photo is on the Carolina Bird Club Photo Gallery. The bird was judged by the NC BRC to be of wild origin (Chat 74:1-5).
